The Master of Studies in Sustainability Leadership is an accredited University of Cambridge postgraduate degree. It is delivered on a part-time basis over 2 years; hence participants can continue in full-time employment and do not need to be UK-based.

This interdisciplinary Masters is offered in association with the Departments of Architecture, Engineering, Geography, Land Economy and the Judge Business School. These Departments all deliver full-time sustainability-related postgraduate degrees.

It also builds on the success of CPSL’s other programmes, including: The Prince of Wales’s Business and Sustainability Programme – in its 17th year; the Climate Leadership Programme; and the Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Business (PCSB) – in its 14th year.

The main components of the Masters are:

• Four week-long residential workshops in Cambridge, usually in September and April of each academic year.

• E-learning via a virtual learning environment between the residential workshops.

• Two individual work-based assignments.

• A group project around an area of mutual relevance.

• An individual research dissertation.

The learning approach is highly interactive and designed to encourage reflection and debate. Participants are supported by a team of expert tutors, directors of studies and supervisors. The speakers, lecturers and facilitators are leading experts and practitioners from academia, business government and civil society.

A key feature of the Programme is the opportunities it provides for: shared-learning from peers; benchmarking against other organisations; and networking with the wide range of contributors.

The Programme spans a 8-month period (part-time) and is built around:

Three short workshops;

Individual work-based assignments;

A group research project around an area of mutual relevance.

Participants are supported by a team of expert practioner tutors and benefit from significant opportunities to engage with a wide range of guest contributors drawn from business, NGOs, academia and government. Networking with peers and benchmarking against other organisations are also key elements of the programme.

Aims

PCSB uniquely encourages participants to go beyond the practical application of tools and models, to develop insights and world views that make business sense of sustainability. Some of the business challenges explored within the programme include:

• Defining the boundaries of corporate responsibility in relation to today’s global challenges;

• Devising and implementing effective approaches to socially responsible business, which at the same time encourage innovation and competitiveness;

• Responding to the diverse social, environmental and economic expectations of stakeholders and society at large; and

• Identifying the critical skills and experience that will enable an organisation to achieve its sustainability objectives.

How is it Taught?

The programme content is explored predominantly through the three workshops, which take participants on a journey, first building their awareness of key sustainability issues and their relevance to business, then deepening their understanding of the global context in which they operate, and finally exploring practical approaches to achieving change in their organisations.

Each workshop provides a mixture of expert input and commentary, intensive group discussion, facilitated project planning and review, opportunities for peer support and informal networking between participants.

Who should Apply?

PCSB is designed for senior and mid-career managers who want to explore business practices and opportunities in the area of sustainability and are looking to increase their own personal development in the field.

Typical job titles include functional heads such as Director of Marketing, Director of Corporate Communications and Director of Public Affairs; and specialist managers such as Sustainable Development Manager, Environmental Director, Stakeholder Relations Director and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Executive, amongst others.

The network is increasingly seen as a major consultative forum for policy makers and other decision-makers around the world, and members are regularly invited to take part in consultation processes that offer benefits to all involved.Membership of this network offers a means of keeping abreast of the debate, and provides further inspiration, encouragement, support and advice to those wishing to help their organisations take a lead on sustainability issues.

The CSN supports and encourages its members to remain engaged with sustainability issues after they have returned to their organisations, to share knowledge, foster cooperation and achieve real change.

The ANU College of Law offers LLM (specialising in International Security Law) for lawyers and Master of International Security Law for non-lawyers.

The development of a distinctive international law dealing with security has been ongoing since the creation of the United Nations in 1945 and with it the United Nations Security Council.

That law has been constantly developing through multiple approaches within distinctive areas of international law in recent decades, such as international humanitarian law, the use of force, and international criminal law. That body of law has now developed such distinctive features that the coherent study of International Security Law is now possible and a dedicated series of programs in the field is justified.

These programs build upon specialist staff expertise in the ANU College of Law in the field of international security law, and also seek to complement other courses and programs offered throughout the ANU in the security field (ie. Department of International Relations, CAP). They also complement the existing programs offered by the CoL in International Law.

A key aspect of these programs will be to provide specialist education and training in the area of international security law to the Australian Public Service, where there has been an enormous expansion in national and international security agencies over the past decade. Key agencies that will have an interest in these programs are the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Attorney General’s Department, and the Australian Federal Police.

The ANU College of Law offers LLM (specialising in Environmental Law) for lawyers and Master of Environmental Law for non-lawyers.

The ANU College of Law is at the forefront of the teaching and study of environmental law in Australia. Its Graduate Program in Environmental Law is designed both for lawyers and those with no previous legal background.

Since its inception in the 1990s, the program has attracted hundreds of students from around Australia and internationally with very different backgrounds, undergraduate degrees and work experience. While many are just beginning their careers, many are well established in them.

The College offers a comprehensive program in environmental law including an array of specialist courses covering key areas ranging from climate to water, environmental planning and impact assessment to effective business regulation and enforcement. The program is taught in Canberra with some courses often offered in Melbourne.

The program’s aim is not only to provide students with a sophisticated understanding of the law but also to explore its origins and implementation, strengths and weaknesses. The interrelationship between the law and policy, science, economics and the broader culture are prime concerns.

For students who have not studied law before, the College offers an introductory course, Fundamentals of Environmental Law, which gives students a good grounding in the workings of the legal system in general and environmental law in particular. This course is offered twice each year in Canberra, in February and July.

Otherwise the Australian Centre for Environmental Law (ACEL) offers an array of specialist courses. Some of these courses, such as International Law of the Environment, International Climate Law and Australian Climate Law are at the moment being offered every year. Others are offered less frequently – typically once every two years – which means that students doing the Masters program part-time can still do these subjects.

The program offers flexible delivery and learning, designed to cater for the needs of people who are unable to attend regular day or evening lectures because of work, family or travel commitments. Its “intensive” courses in which the face-to-face tuition is usually compressed into 3-5 days will be attractive to both part-time and full-time students.

Please note not all courses are offered every year and different courses will be offered in future years, available to students commencing the program part time.
