Divided into three broad categories: Live, Garden and Farm, SLEX incorporates workshops, seminars and forums showing how sustainable practises can be applied to an urban household, a backyard, a large garden, a small business, an institution, a hobby farm, or even large scale commercial farming enterprises. Sustainable housing, farming and gardening tours also take place around the main Live Garden Farm event.
Armidale is known as a centre of education and this is showcased at SLEX. With the University of New England as major sponsor, and TAFE New England Institute and The Armidale School also strong supporters if the event, SLEX is seen as a major focus for sustainability in Education in Armidale.
SLEX grew from the contribution of groups like Sustainable Living Armidale, an inclusive community group with an optimistic outlook that meets regularly to plan and implement positive change in Armidale. Sustainable Living Armidale (SLA) – A Transition Initiative, is a community organisation set up in 2007 to build networks, raise awareness, and inspire and empower the local community to build a more self-reliant, resilient and sustainable future, in the face of climate change and peak oil.
