Griffith University launches new degrees

Pro Vice Chancellor (Business) Michael Powell said the eight new offerings from the Griffith Business School reflected industry demand.

“For example, the financial planning major now available in the Commerce degree follows a review of the industry which found a need to provide more structured training for financial advisors,” Professor Powell said.

He said the two year options already available on the Logan campus would be provided to students at Nathan from 2011, allowing more students to be out in the work force earning money sooner.

“The double degrees with creative industries offer students strong business components while learning aspects of digital media so they graduate not just with technical and creative skills, but also business savvy,” Professor Powell said.

The Bachelor of Social Work is the first of its kind on the Gold Coast and was created in response to workforce and community needs.

Social work convener Associate Professor Clare Tilbury said the strong population growth in the Brisbane / Gold Coast corridor and ageing population meant there was an increased demand for social work skills.

“The first cohort of students will be trained in the new Gold Coast University Hospital,” Associate Professor Clare Tilbury said.

\”Hospital placements are extremely popular and give students a good grounding in the diversity of their professional role. They have the opportunity to work as an integral part of the multidisciplinary health team which also includes physiotherapists, doctors, nurses, occupational therapists and others,\” Associate Professor Tilbury said.

The Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science was also designed to meet a need in the public hospital system and private pathology labs for professionally qualified medical laboratory scientists.
