This degree programme provides a broad foundation of science-based skills. It will equip you with an understanding of contemporary issues in environmental management and knowledge of the interactions between processes in the physical environment and ecosystems.

You will gain an awareness of the legislative and ethical framework within which environmental scientists operate, equipping you for careers in a range of environmental professions, particularly in areas relating to environmental protection.

Stage 1: You study soil and land resources, ecology, global environmental systems, quantitative analysis and field techniques.

Stage 2: You take compulsory modules addressing: the practice of environmental science; terrestrial ecosystems; climate and environmental change; conservation issues; environmental assessment and design, as well as optional modules.

You can study land, freshwater and marine environments; pollution; and the ecology of natural and managed systems; alongside aspects of the economic, political and legislative framework for environmental management.

Between Stages 2 and 3 you can choose to take a placement year and get practical experience in the environmental sector.

Stage 3: You continue studying core modules in: climate change and land use; biological conservation; ecosystems management; and sustainability assessment, as well as optional modules. You undertake a project, which may involve scientific research or a consultancy-based investigation.
