This means there are different forms of presentation and written and oral assessment requirements between taught coursework and projects across the Master programs.

Areas of study

Performance (Including Jazz)

Performance Studies is available for a range of instruments taught through the School of Music (including Jazz), and involves participating in both solo and ensemble performances. Solo recitals may include accompaniment and chamber music.

Musicology

Musicology is designed for those students wishing to undertake a range of specialised musicological studies, leading towards further research in Music. It is also suitable for those wishing to transfer or combine their skills and knowledge from another field of Music, or another discipline, into musicology; or for students who wish to incorporate a range of interdisciplinary coursework into their Music study. In particular, through individual study, it provides the opportunity for students to participate in a supervised professional placement in one of the national collecting institutions, and to complete a project on an aspect of the collections. Students may also choose to study the management of a range of performance activities.

Composition

Composition studies seeks to further develop students’ skills, knowledge, creativity and experience across the stylistic, technical and expressive dimensions of Composition in a contemporary context. During their program, Composition students are expected to undertake an in-depth study of a variety of musical works, of diverse musical styles and techniques, and that offer different creative approaches or artistic concepts. Students should also take the opportunities to participate in or observe rehearsals and performances by staff and students of the School. In addition, where possible, students should develop opportunities for performances of their works at the School and elsewhere by collaborating with performers.

Entry

Applicants should have a four year Bachelors degree in music with relevant experience, or an Honours degree and demonstration of an advanced level of skill and knowledge in a selected field – typically through an audition. Graduates of four year programs in fields other than Music, who show a high level capacity or aptitude in a nominated field of Music, may also receive entry to this program.

Students are normally required to audition, or submit a folio of their work, and be interviewed at the School of Music. Some programs may require students to complete additional tests. For overseas and interstate applicants, an audio/video recording and/or folio of work may be considered as a provisional audition.
