There are various colleges and universities across the world that provide tertiary education. Tertiary education is the third level of education after the completion of high school. Once tertiary education is over, we get a degree, certificate or diploma as proof of our achievement. But my objective here is not discussing degrees or diploma but talking about the role of tertiary education in the development of society.

Tertiary education is the level of education that shapes our career and future. Knowledge has become a key element for growth and development in today’s global economic environment. It is also very important for surviving in the competitive environment that has started to prevail for the past few decades since globalization came into practice. Today we are living in a knowledge-driven society. Tertiary education plays a very vital role in national economic development. With the emergence of global markets, companies are focusing on employing more professionals with a thorough knowledge of the specialized field. Tertiary level of education provides the maximum exposure to the practical aspect of the knowledge already possessed.

A few decades ago, tertiary education was considered as simply higher education. There were limited fields to study such as humanities, science, or social science. Options were limited which caused the development of limited resources. Not every profession was considered profitable. But with changes in economic scenarios of country and the world, education systems have also changed their priorities. Universities and colleges are focusing on various streams of education. They are changing their orthodox approach and embracing a new knowledge system. They are also changing their teaching methods.

Research and development has a very good exposure at international level. Multinational Companies are setting up research centers in different parts of the globe. These centers require people with improved skill and knowledge. The centers need experts for their research which again leads us to the statement – why tertiary education is important.

The number of students has increased at the tertiary level of education. More and more students are opting for tertiary degrees. Financial institutions are providing them with finance, as there are always chances for students to get decent jobs and repay loans. International collaborations among universities from different countries are taking place. Consequently students can easily travel internationally for higher education.

Increased knowledge streams have increased the employment opportunities available. The quality of education is also improving. However society is still not able to take full advantage of tertiary education and it’s students. Expansion and diversification of the tertiary education system is required. Adequate funds must be arranged for the continuance and development of Higher Education programs.

The structure of the Higher Education system should be such that it becomes easier for graduates and post graduates to get jobs they deserve and are qualified for. Courses must be updated on a regular basis as the needs of global markets and country’s economy change and are modified. The system must be fair, transparent, and flexible.
With constant changes in policies of the world economy, the demands and needs of society have also changed a great deal in recent times. This will lead to change in the education system.

Remarkable changes in education, research and opportunity have been seen in last few decades. But there is still a long way to go. Knowledge based professions are increasing but the education system needs to catch up with the demand of professionals as when they are required.
