The days of sorting metal, plastic and other recycling items into separate bins are over on the University of Connecticut\’s flagship campus.
Officials say the Storrs campus recently switched to single-stream recycling, in which all recyclable items can be thrown into a single container.
UConn sustainability coordinator Jennifer Weymouth says students, staff and faculty currently recycle only about 20 percent of their disposable items each day. She hopes the ease of single-stream recycling boosts that number.
Willimantic Waste, UConn\’s trash hauler, takes all the material to a facility and uses large blowers, magnets and other devices to separate the metal, plastics, glass and other items.
