Environmental science brings together skills and perspectives from many different disciplines including biology, chemistry, economics, geography and mathematics to build an understanding of the world around us.
Through this program you’ll develop the skills required to explore the complexity of the natural environment and our interactions with it and will graduate prepared for a successful environmental career.
In your first year you’ll study a broad range of courses in the biological, physical and social sciences with an emphasis on their contribution to understanding environmental issues. In the second and third years you’ll further develop theoretical and practical skills in multiple disciplines as well as specialising in a major area of your choice.
The degree program includes extensive field, laboratory and small group activities as well as individual and team project work. You’ll also have the opportunity to participate in the Industrial Affiliates Program to gain experience relevant to your future employment opportunities.
At the end of the first year you’ll select an area of specialisation from the following majors:
Environmental Protection
This major focuses on the interactions between humans and the environment in terms of biosecurity and quarantine and how to minimise the impact of environmental factors on the public and the natural environment by creating sustainable communities and ecosystems.
Environmental Sustainability
You’ll learn about how people interact with the environment, including how decisions are made about managing the local, national and global environment. As a graduate, you’ll play a key role in helping society move towards an environmentally sustainable future.
Natural Resources and Pollution
The chemical and physical aspects of the natural environment and the impacts of human waste and pollution on soil, water and air are the focus of this major. It leads to work in pollution monitoring and other aspects of the environment to predict the effects of humans and to minimise their impact.
