Combining the knowledge and skills of planning with in-depth study of core environmental areas, the program integrates all aspects of environmental sciences (natural, social and economic) with planning principles.

Your foundation year introduces you to basic concepts, theories and methods of planning and environmental sciences. Interdisciplinary skills in environmental problem-solving are developed along with generic skills in project management, group work, research, critical thinking, research and writing for professional practice.

Years 2 to 5, you will undertake a range of planning courses and receive training in environmental science and continue the development of specific and generic skills.

After the first year, and based on your individual interests, you may choose electives as part of the following majors:

Applied Biology

This major provides you with a broad study of biology, ranging from physiology and biochemistry to whole organism and population biology.

Applied Chemistry

This major will provide you with a broad study in environmental and applied chemistry. You will gain strong laboratory and analytical skills, as well as skills in pollution monitoring and assessment.

Ecotourism

This major combines study in environmental biology and ecology with tourism management and business practice to produce a unique combination of skills across the fields of applied biology, environmental science and commerce with a tourism focus. You can take a field course located at a significant ecotourism destination.

Environmental Science

This major will provide you with the opportunity to focus on the science of sustainability and indicators of environmental condition. It also provides skills in environmental monitoring and impact assessment procedures.

Marine Biology

This major combines detailed study of sandy shore and rocky headlands biology, estuarine environments such as seagrass and mangroves, marine animals and coastal processes. By combining environmental management and in-shore marine biology, this is a highly employment-focused marine biology major with extensive fieldwork components.

Wildlife Biology

This major will provides you with a cohesive study of terrestrial biology. As well as providing a broad coverage of biology from biochemical processes to ecosystems, this major specialises in wildlife biology from an environmental perspective.

The fifth year of the combined program is differentiated into a Pass Stream and an Honours Stream. Students may be eligible to complete an Honours qualification within the Bachelor of Urban and Environmental Planning component of the combined degree within the current five year study program.
