Now in their eleventh year, the Green Globe Awards are the leading environmental awards in New South Wales. They showcase outstanding achievement in the sustainable use of natural resources in NSW and leadership in tackling climate change issues.

Winners were selected by an independent panel of experts and announced at a NSW Parliament House ceremony hosted by the Minister for Climate Change and the Environment, the Hon. Frank Sartor MP.

The University won the Public Sector Award for 2010. Judges said they were impressed with the way the University had incorporated and implemented sustainability initiatives throughout all aspects of its operations, policy and planning.

Saying it was an honour for the University to receive a Green Globe Award, Director of Sustainability, Leanne Denby, said Macquarie has always approached sustainability in line with its curriculum themes of People, Planet and Participation.

“I think what probably made us stand out was the fact that we didn’t just report on water, energy and waste savings we’ve made in our submission, but on how we are trying to embed sustainability into everything that we do across the whole university,” she said.

“We highlighted many of the things we have done within these areas in order to reach our goals and objectives and become a more sustainable campus.”
